Fraser Island Black Marlin

Our unique black marlin fishery is something simply special.  The flats of Fraser Island are the only place in the world you can target black marlin in gin clear shallow water (4-10 ft).

Anglers from all over the world have travelled here to experience this unique fishery.  A flats black marlin is a bucket list capture for many anglers,  particularly fly anglers.  These fish can be caught using a range of methods on fly, from sight casting free swimmers to teasing up behind the boat and switching on both the slightly deeper areas and the flats.

For conventional anglers the same methods can be used with lure and live bait.  Switching with live baits is highly effective but we also get great results trolling a pattern of Pakula lures in the spread.  For casting purists, sight casting on the flats with soft plastics and stickbaits is an exciting way to target them and often allows for some great photo opportunities.

Our black marlin season inside Fraser Island on the flats and sheltered waters is from October through to the end of December.  Weather patterns, currents and spawning aggregations can determine how many fish we see in a season, but every year we see a migration – numbers simply vary one year to the next.

While targeting black marlin, you may see other species on the flats including golden trevally, queenfish, mackerels and various tunas.  Out on the blue water you will also encounter these species and they can often be found smashing bait on the surface.

Our black marlin guided charters include all fishing tackle, but if you wish to bring your own we can provide a list of what you need.

You will need to bring your own lunch, sunscreen, hat and sun protection along with a spray jacket.
Water and morning tea are provided.
