March Fishing Report and Newsletter

March Madness

March 2020 was a great month for fishing as it always is. We had a ball with species such as golden trevally, queenfish, mackerel, cobia, mac and longtail tuna.  Some big longtails have appeared and tested anglers skills and gear.

We also had some good sessions on the flats with some big fish landed. Queenfish were  also a standout providing some sport with their aerial antics.

Our longtail tuna run started on cue and we saw some good schools of fish move into the bay. Stick baits, slugs, soft plastics and poppers all worked well depending on the situation.

Some big mac tuna also provided some sport around the schools with finny scad, queenfish, golden trevally and bludger trevally feeding on the same bait ball at times.

Closer to home the inshore reefs produced some cod, coral trout and sweetlip. Targeting these species on our half day trips is always fun and guests often take home a tasty feed.

COVID-19 and Guided Fishing

The big cloud over everyone’s head is of course COVID-19.  With social distancing and travel bans in place, we decided that we would temporarily shut down on-water operations for public safety.
This turned out to be a smart move as we have all seen the virus ramp up overseas with devastating effects.  Hopefully in the near future we’ll be able to resume guiding.  Tourism has taken a huge hit and when things settle down, please consider booking a trip with a local tourism operator, be it fishing or other, and help us keep afloat in these uncertain times.  I have no doubt in the long term things will be positive again, but until people start jumping on planes our client base has shrunk significantly.

We are ready to go as soon as things are safe.

Our New Guide

We welcome Kurt Rowlands to the team.

As the newest addition to our team, Kurt’s enthusiasm and passion for fishing the local waterways is unmistakable.  A true local, he grew up fishing the waters on the Fraser Coast and has spent many years angling the Sandy Straits and Hervey Bay, along with the local freshwater impoundments and rivers.  Targeting everything from bass and sooty grunter, to golden trevally and pelagic species like longtail tuna, cobia and various mackerels in the salt, Kurt has a wealth of local experience.  He is also a keen fly fisherman and often spends his time on the flats chasing golden trevally, queenfish and GT’s.  Kurt is a qualified coxswain, has current senior first aid and has undertaken the necessary training under the guidance of Andrew.  Kurt’s easy-going attitude, enthusiasm and fishy nature see him produce excellent results for his guests and he can show you the best fishing Hervey Bay has to offer.
We wish Kurt all the best with his guiding and can already see he will be an asset to the business.
