September Heats Things Up
September saw our usual seasonal changes with water temps rising and more surface activity. Yakka schools have moved into the central bay and have been replaced by herring on the reefs along the island.
Northerly winds are part of the transition from winter to our spring and summer season and can sometimes be a problem for us accessing northern parts of the bay.
On the northerly blows we fished inshore targeting various trevally, queenfish, flathead and bream on the flats. Catching a few critters in shallow water is always better than not getting out at all in windy conditions.
When conditions allowed cobia, golden trevally, mac and longtail tuna, school mackerel, grunter, various trevallys, estuary cod and more were caught during the month.
Mac tuna have started to trickle into the bay with schools spread out from Kingfisher to Rooneys Point. Small metal lures have been the best way to tempt the bites, the occasional school has been falling to other lures such as the NC custom stick bait, zman streakz and bigger metal lures. Longtail tuna have also been on the surface in small schools along with deeper in the water column on the reefs.
We had some fun times over the school holiday period, it was certainly a joy to see the next generation enjoying some time on the water. The fishing was a little patchy for a few weeks, but the kids showed good patience to get through the quite periods and land some good fish. With many landing their biggest fish to date.

Guides Catch Of The Month
Land Based Bonefish
Friend of ours Harry Railz scored this bonefish while fishing Fraser Islands Eastern Beach over the school holidays.
We do catch bonefish from time to time out of the guide boats, but his past few weeks has seen a few caught off Fraser’s Beaches. I first met Harry as a 3 year old fishing mad toddler, now he is a very accomplished angler. Harry was over the moon with his latest PB, well done H man!
As I write this we are in the middle of a rain event. Good falls with over 100mm recorded for the week. The local river catchments also got some good rain which will help the local fishing scene and flush some bait out. Looking forward to some good fishing ahead.

How To Catch Fish On Metal Casting Lures
IMAGINE you’re stranded on a desert island; a very fishy desert island, and you’re allowed to take only one lure. What would it be? The first thing that pops into my head is a metal casting lure. Why? Because these seemingly simple lures are built to catch fish. They’re incredibly versatile with a long list of species willing to take them.
