Glamour Winter Days
Well what a past month we have had, the great run of weather saw our guides out every day. Glass out conditions daily made for some great fishing and with whales now in the bay the wildlife and scenery has been world class. Snapper were the main target for many with numbers down a little this year, it made landing a good size snapper just that little bit more special.
Longtail tuna have been about deep around the yakka schools, fish over the 130 cm mark have been landed and make for some great sport. Anglers certainly get tested against the big longtails with plenty of patience required to land them. A few big cobia put in an appearance which were mostly hooked deep while targeting snapper or trevally. Mackerel species like school, grey and spanish have been about with a fairly reasonable run of school mackerel in mid July. The trevally species were also about with bludger, goldens, diamond, tea leaf, gold spot and others caught through the month. Other captures were big cod, coral trout, kingfish queenfish, flathead and more.
The past month the water temps have not dropped much at all. Hovering around 20 c in the central bay the days of sub 19 c water seem to be a thing of the past. This has made the snapper season a little hard to predict, the next month and into September we should continue to see snapper, along with species like longtail tuna, mac tuna, mackerel and golden trevally.
It’s almost here ! Our migration of black marlin will be here before we know it, along with other speedsters like spotted mackerel, mac tuna and longtail tuna. If you haven’t booked yet get in early for some spring time sport fishing. We also still have slots left over the September school holiday period which is always popular with the kids. The Whales Are Here
It looks like a great whale watching season once again. We have had some great encounters already while fishing. Why not send your family out with our whale watching partner Freedom III while you enjoy a day fishing with us.
Local Lure Maker Nashy’s Custom Lures
Hervey Bay lure maker Chris Nash has come up with a great stick bait which we have been testing with great success. Longtails, queenfish, yellow fin tuna, kingfish and bludger trevally have been loving the design. If you would like more info check out his Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/nashyscustomlures/ . They will soon be available at Tackle World Hervey Bay.
Berkley Testing Trip
Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing, Freedom III and The Mantra Hervey Bay again hosted another great tackle testing trip with Berkley- Pure Fishing. We tested a range of Penn rods and reels, berkley gulp range, nitro hooks along with their micro jigs, leaders and braid. Tackle Shop owners and managers from across the country got to enjoy some great fishing in Hervey Bay along with testing the gear. Snapper, various trevallys, cobia, longtil, mac tuna, mackerels and more were captured.
It was a great event and we were happy to be part of it. Showcasing some of our fishing and water ways was a pleasure and catching up with people in the tackle industry is always great.
