Hervey Bay Fishing Charters – August 2018

August Produces Great Winter Sportfishing

Well that’s Winter done and dusted for another year. Each winter just seems to get bigger and bigger with so many guests enjoying our great winter fishery. Sunny warm glass out days were enjoyable particularly for anglers from down south. We saw a quitter than usual run of snapper but still managed some cracking specimens.

Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing - August Fishing Report

Some great specimens hitting the deck

Fishing soft plastics worked well on the snapper with the old faithful 5 inch electric chicken getting results. Guests also enjoyed some big golden trevally as bycatch when chasing snapper along with queenfish, tea leaf trevally, grunter, mac tuna and longtails.

Winter longtails were also a highlight with fish over the 130 cm mark landed. These big stubborn demand patience and persistence on light tackle often emptying the spool on the first run. A great reward for guests willing to but in the time.

On the windier days we fished the sandy straits with flathead, trevally and bream keeping us busy on the flats. Working with 6 lb outfits we have enjoyed some great light tackle sportfishing on the flats. Something that is a great option on a windy day.

Spring Season Ahead

Well its spring and that means our pelagics will begin to ramp up. The coming months will see spotted mackerel move into the bay along with our black marlin migration. Numbers always vary year to year so we will not know what sort of season we will have until its upon us.

Black marlin wont be far away

Mac and longtail tuna will also become more active over the warmer months and will move throughout the bay and onto the northern flats at times in small pods. This will create some great sight fishing opportunity’s.

Other species like gold and black spot cod, Spanish and school mackerel, golden trevally, diamond trevally and many more will be also about over the coming months.

Spotty mackerel will appear late October through until Christmas

Sydney Fishing Lockouts

Anglers and industry united in opposition to fishing lockouts
Read more >>

Meeting with Fisheries Minister A UNITED response by recreational anglers and the recreational fishing industry has made the ‘No Lockouts’ message clear to the NSW government.

Niall Blair on Monday, recreational fishers, the tackle industry, boat trade and fishing media explained that lockouts in 25 locations in the proposed Sydney marine park will be unacceptable to the public. After the meeting, Stan Konstantaras, President of the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW, said that the huge public response to the lockouts had raised numerous concerns including not just preservation of public fishing rights, but also the economic effect on the NSW fishing tackle and boating industries, loss of disabled access and concerns that boating and rock fishing safety will be compromised.

Please show your support and stop the lockouts before we see more of this up and down the coast see more on this Facebook Page.
